A 14-year-old boy was found dead just days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.

Heartbreaking Discovery

The young boy's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Begin

The investigation learned how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."

In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged burglary victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said items was not stolen in the first place".

Media reports about the alleged stolen remains generated online responses, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".

The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.

Mental Health Effect

She explained that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views really were important to him.

"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".

When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet anytime he needed, but refuted taking anything.

Digital Bullying

In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.

The proceedings learned that a 19-year-old urged the teenager to end his life.

She had no concerns on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".

He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Response

The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local High School.

On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.

After the conversation, the educator said she called Kai's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.

The court heard his parents said they never got that message.

Formal Conclusion

Lead coroner informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of online networks.

"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."

The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency led to or added to his passing and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to discern his intent."
