If you're wanting a slasher-horror flick that offers guilty pleasure while eliciting cringes, chances are Bone Lake is on your interest. A recent scary film from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan hit theaters on the third of October with an absurd premise and a evocative label to complement.

A Combination of Levity and Horror

Given the title like Bone Lake and an initial moments featuring characters running butt naked through the forest—only to be hit with a crossbow in vulnerable spots—you'd be right there's a lot of humor all through the story. Additionally, the film's ending, which portray the central pair exhausted and injured yet giggling hysterically together, exude a sense of grim amusement.

It would be necessary to discover a reason to chuckle over, too, if you experienced what the character Diego and the character Sage go through in Bone Lake. A duo full of romantic issues from the start—failure to talk, unsatisfying sex, an disproportionate load of economic duties, etc.—their connection is strained when another duo, Will and Cin, gatecrash their love-filled retreat.

A Morbid Change

At first seeming to be a contrast of opposites between the two pairs—Sage and Diego are awkward and blue-collar, whereas Will and Cin have a wealthy, luxurious lifestyle and appear to be making out on any handy location—shifts to horror as the getaway goes on. Cin and Will play on Diego and Sage's insecurities in their union. They spread lies and rumors about the protagonists, claiming to have information on an infidelity and further conflicts.

All of these insecurities explode in the biggest way possible when Sage and Diego find out that Will and Cin aren't just here at Bone Lake accidentally: they own it and have been luring duos to the estate in order to get them to stray on their partners. The reason? Since Cin and Will are truly brother and sister. Subsequent to their incestuous affair was exposed by their parents and they were forcibly separated unwillingly, they chose to get back at everyone else (including their family). If the world rejected them simply for loving who they want, then they'll fight back at the world. Cin and Will's aim is to hold up a mirror to all the couples they ultimately end up murdering, in an endeavor to show that their affection is just as valid (or wrong) as the love of these additional duos they try to break up.

Unforeseen Strengths

Yet, what Cin and Will fail to consider is that Sage and Diego, in spite of their poor dialogue with one another, do care for and cherish each other. It needed having a deadly duo try to break them up and kill them to see it. Though it may seem grim, it isn't played that way. Bone Lake's style is closer to satire than actual fear.

The movie ends with Diego and Sage joining forces to get away from Cin and Will's killer motives. Notably is that while, at the start of the movie, you feel a deep abyss in the bond between Diego and Sage in relation to Cin and Will, by the conclusion, Bone Lake reverses it upside down. Cin and Will split up to chase Sage and Diego, but Sage and Diego are talking more effectively now. They team up to butcher Will with a cutting device. They then attack the character Cin, who meets a bloody fate at the bottom of Bone Lake's lake—but only after the character Diego retrieves the wedding ring intended for Sage that the character Will had taken and gifted to the character Cin.

Consequences

Following the events of their two killings, covered in bodily fluids, Sage and Diego sit together on the back of a vessel. Unexpectedly, this is the closest they've been since the beginning of the story, now that all their relationship troubles have been exposed for each of them to witness, and all they have to hold onto are their battered and bruised selves. To affirm their new closeness and deep connection of one another, Diego moves closer to put the engagement band on the character Sage's hand and, when she looks to examine it in the light, the pair break into laughter.

It's easy to grasp the cause: At the time, Will asked for marriage to Cin, it was a picturesque, affectionate instant.
