{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The concerning event took place on the third rotation when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
