Game Coverage
21 mins: Intense Action as Both Teams Battle
21 mins: The Broncos push forward to halfway and nearly break through the defensive line through Walsh and Shibasaki on the left side. A further superb delivery from Adam Reynolds on the final play maintains Brisbane's pressure. Over three plays they stay in control, but some quick passes free the speedy Jahrome Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a set restart is given for holding the player. Melbourne are finding their flow, and Warbrick breaks through the defense, followed by Xavier Coates making a sprint – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder charge! Could that be a yellow card? No, says Atkins, because Coates was buckling. The fullback is placed on report regardless, and Melbourne resume their onslaught.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Attack
19 mins: Cameron Munster is busy as Melbourne charge quickly down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Jahrome Hughes kicks high, Katoa rushes up, but in the aerial battle, the second-rower knocks on, and the Broncos at last get a breather.
18th Minute: Melbourne Exert Pressure on Broncos
18 mins: Melbourne execute a textbook set from the kickoff and apply plenty of force on Mariner with the final kick. Again, the Broncos struggle to advance near halfway in response, and Reynolds is compelled to boot it deep to stay in the game.
17th Minute: Injury for Storm
17th minute: There's a setback for the Storm. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin issue. Wishart is on in his place.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, absolutely stunning. Following consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are tiring. On the third play close to the line on the left side, the Storm send the ball inside for two passes before Hughes kicks it off the ground and the charging Eliesa Katoa times his charge to perfection to pounce on the loose ball and stand to celebrate his side's second touchdown!
From just to the right of the uprights, Nick Meaney converts his second conversion.
12th Minute: Storm Display Exciting Attack
12 mins: The Storm look thrilling in attack. They have pace from the ruck, grunt from the forwards, and sharp passing from the backs. A dangerous attack ends with a high kick to the left corner that is dropped by Walsh and leads to a infringement to the Storm for an escort on Xavier Coates. The Storm decline the penalty goal and set up near the goalposts. They get a set restart – and another – as Cameron Munster dances left and right.
10th Minute: Tense Action
10th minute: Stefano Utoikamanu has delivered as promised early and his carry from the restart allows Harry Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to dart from acting half. Hughes boots from 40 meters and Reece Walsh catches the high kick on his 10m line. The Broncos show less penetration this drive and get lucky on the last when Ben Hunt's pass to Adam Reynolds goes to ground. Fortunately, the experienced playmaker delivers a great kick to turn Coates around and makes the Melbourne wing to run from his in-goal. The Broncos are overzealous with their chase, catching the winger with a high tackle, and Melbourne can gain favorable territory.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Brisbane (Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Utoikamanu drives hard to the 20m line. Then, from fast play off the back, every key Storm player handle the ball as they move it out to the right edge until Meaney straightens up, angles in at high speed, and breaks through a flimsy defensive line to score for an instant reply!
The centre recovers to add the conversion. We have a shootout!
7 mins: Both Sides Trade Possession
7 mins: Both sides exchange conservative sets around halfway, but then the Brisbane attempt to attack on their left, only to be unable to hit Shibasaki with the pass. William Warbrick advances quickly and earns a knock on for his troubles.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Broncos
5 mins: That is the absolute dream start for Brisbane, scoring first before the Storm have even touched the ball, in an offensive play dominated by both Haas and Reece Walsh. The Melbourne might be somewhat frustrated at Grant Atkins awarding such an early penalty, but they were soundly opened by the rapid Brisbane offense.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 0-6 Broncos (Mariner, 3)
Following a long kick, Brisbane begin their attack. Melbourne give away a set restart for offside, and quickly the ball is in the red zone. Reece Walsh positions himself? Waiting on the right edge, drawing in Howarth, holding his position, then somehow passing to Mariner on his wing. The winger cuts infield, reaches the line, then just, only just stays in the field of play as he runs around to touchdown beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the conversion, but the Bunker confirms the on-field decision. The venue is erupting to the sound of ecstatic Queenslanders.
2nd Minute: Early Infringement
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Payne Haas, takes the first hit-up of the match and Melbourne are quick to tackle… but only a few plays later the Storm give away the opening infringement of the game for Grant impeding Payne Haas on the ground. Brisbane immediately on the attack.
