Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
